Project Description
DeBruin is the survey subconsultant to RBA group for this streetscape improvement project. First we set horizontal and vertical control using traditional surveying techniques such as digital level runs, GPS, and Total Station. We then collected the topographic data using our 3D Laser ScanStation. We did this work at night when traffic was lightest to optimize production. The ScanStation produces point clouds as shown below which resemble digital photos. The point clouds are registered together and then we use Cyclone software to pick out the points which will be incorporated in the final map. This is called “virtual surveying”. This method is particularly useful when detailed mapping is required in a high traffic area; the advantages being that we don’t have to send a rod man into traffic, field work is completed quickly, more data is collected, and one person can do the virtual surveying from a computer desk rather than deciding what shots to get in the field. The result is the same as it would be with a conventional survey, and we also have more detail should additional information become necessary.
