Project Description
For this project we performed hydrographic surveys of 44 canals and eight miles of boat channels in the Great South Bay, and handed off the mapping to a design team. We used the Nassau County GIS as a base map on a boat-mounted laptop, and collected X-Y positions and soundings via differential GPS and dual electronic depth sounders. We made mapping information available to the designers on the same day it was collected. We plotted in color from ArcView, with the Microstation CAD files referenced in, using different colors to indicate various depth layers of the bottom contours. A large database of geographic information and associated data has been collected in this project area and has been incorporated into an overall map aiding in the Town's ability to manage its resources. The Town has also been able to use this data on other projects.
