Project Description |

DeBruin was contracted to develop an inventory of the drainage structures and storm drainage lines which drain to the harbor, within the limits of the Hempstead Harbor watershed. The locations and types of drainage facilities affecting Hempstead Harbor were identified and catalogued. Maps of pipes and structures were created based on available record plans. Drainage structures and pipes were then digitized into the Nassau County GIS as points and lines, respectively. A program was written to keep the lines connected to corresponding points so that the lines would remain connected to the structures as the positions of the structures were improved. To verify the existing positions of the structures, Blue Marble software was used to integrate GIS and GPS. A field crew was able to go out in the field with a laptop containing the GIS hooked up to a GPS rover unit. As the crew traveled the project limits, their current position was displayed on the computer screen with an accuracy of better than one meter. The crew adjusted the positions of the structures as they were located, and linked additional data to them in the database. The data was then checked using customized programs in the office. The GIS layers, associated data tables, and metadata created with CorpsMet95 software were delivered in digital format. |
